History of Technology in Art

Pencil...Probably still the most effective and basic tool in art class.

  1. I also chose the pencil! I agree the pencil is still the most effective and basic tool in the art class. It all starts will an idea that is transferred into a sketch using a pencil. Not only do I use the pencil for quick sketches, but also to free write ideas. I use pencils to lightly draw out my paintings first on the canvas as well. I can't imagine art without it.

  2. One of the things I've found most interesting through this process is seeing all the new technologies and how much all the content areas have changed. However, there are also many foundational aspects to content areas which have never changed.

Regardless of any new technologies the pencil is still vitally important in Art and it may never end up being changed.

    Great observation!

  3. I agree Rachel! I also chose the pencil as well as I saw Karen had also. I feel it also speak as an import an technology based on the fact we all chose this technology and use it in our own personal lives as Art Majors. I would have never considered the pencil as a technology until I looked at the timeline. When I think of technology today I automatically think digital technology and that in my mind was how it was defined.

But yes, the pencil is definitely the most effective tool and I feel with always be! There is something special about the instant gratification in drawing or writing with a pencil. It's the most direct and instant way to record ideas, thoughts, and feelings without the permanence. This way ideas can be reworked until one is satisfied.

  4. I like this picture, but do you think pencil drawings are cheap forms of art? Or do you find that pencils lead to more artists, and that's a good thing, despite its potential detraction from paintings? As for myself, I'm confused on the matter. I certainly appreciate the pencil, especially being a writer, but pencil drawings don't move me quite like paintings.
